Katie Rubin's demons are both universal and unique. She's a spunky survivor of multiple monkeys on her back, and she's here to tell her tale. The local actress, who graduated with a Master of Fine Arts in acting from UC Davis, is presenting an engaging one-woman show at Sacramento Theatre Company's small theater for the next two months.

The message of "Insides Out!," the remarkable one-woman show written and performed by Katie Rubin, is that we all have demons and every day is a struggle to see whether they - or our better selves - win out. Laziness, lust, dependency, insecurity, greed - it doesn't matter what they are. And it doesn't matter whether we label them, name and attribute personalities to them, or consider them as psychological archetypes, they must be dealt with. Rubin's show is about her struggle, her roller-coaster ride through near-destruction.

For 29-year-old Katie Rubin, the road to addiction started at age 8. It began with the realization that she was uncomfortable in her own skin. That's as far back as the actress and writer can recall feeling the unease that would spur binge eating, substance abuse and sex addiction. Addiction and the roads that lead into and away from it form the crux of Rubin's one-woman show, "Insides OUT!" The show opens Saturday for a nine-week run at the Sacramento Theatre Company's Stage Two.
